Disability:IN North Carolina (DI-NC) welcomes you to a special B2B session focused on North Carolina Achieving a Better Life Experience (NC ABLE) accounts. On November 5, 2026, at 11:30 a.m., join us for a 90-minute-deep dive into how NC ABLE accounts help veterans with disabilities build wealth while protecting vital public benefits. NC ABLE accounts allow veterans and their families to save and invest tax-free for disability expenses—without risking means-tested benefits such as VA pensions, SSI, or Medicaid.
Key Eligibility, Financial, and Benefit Highlights
-
- Eligibility: Disability onset before age 46 qualifies.
- Disability: SSDI, SSI, or qualifying physician diagnosis.
- Residency: U.S. residents; self- or representative managed.
- Benefit: Savings don’t affect VA pensions or supports.
- Contribution: Up to $20,000/year; more if working.
- Open an account: $25 minimum.
- Tax: Funds and withdrawals are tax-free.
The session will include a Q&A segment. Eligibility has expanded: NC ABLE accounts, once limited to individuals whose disability began before age 26, are now available to anyone whose disability occurred before age 46—including veterans. The NC ABLE Program enables eligible individuals to save for qualified disability expenses without jeopardizing Medicaid, SSI, or other public supports.

Jeff Hancock, CRPS, CMFC, AIF is a seasoned financial expert with 28 years at BB&T. In May 2021, he joined the NC Department of State Treasurer to lead the Supplemental Savings Program, overseeing the NC ABLE Program and the NC 401(k) and 457 Plans.

Paul Berry, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Integration, Veterans Bridge Home will help lead the discussion on NC ABLE accounts. He previously served as Military Installations Coordinator for the NC Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and as NCServes Central Carolina Network Director at the USO of North Carolina. A 30-year U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Berry retired as Command Sergeant Major with assignments in Ghana, South Korea, Poland, Morocco, Somalia, Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. His honors include the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
